SCREENSHOTS Sept 27! - Mastermind V2

I'm changing this thread to discuss Mastermind v2. I realized that a lot of these additions would work best if they were built in, instead of added on. So keep suggestions coming, and I'll have them in Mastermind v2.

When will v2 be done? A little while. I have another game in the works :)

My plan is to sort of start from scratch, then move chunks of the current code into v2 as I need them.

How would you make navy work?

- Weather control
How does this work exactly?

You'd generate dangerous weather conditions, like hurricanes, in an enemy country.

- Satellites 3.0
What does this includes?

Super expensive, but it'll let you see some more info about the user. Maybe where they're training units?

I've heard navy from several players, but I have no clue how that would actually work. Any ideas?

think that a great addition to the game would be the ability to buy and trade things with other layers, similar to the Monopoly trading system. That would be really cool, and I'm sure others will like it, too!

There should an addition that totals up all the troops and tanks your enemies have, so you don't have to check every single country to find out how much your enemy have overall. A good place to put this is on the username list. However this depends on what satellite you have:

No satellite: No amount

Satellite 1.0: Finds estimated total of all troops and tanks. If shields are used then you can't find the number of troops and tanks in one country of course.

Satellite 2.0: Finds exact total of all troops and tanks, regardless if your enemy have activated shield or not.

I suggest how about we have a VS mode along with classic when you crate a game and you get to choose.
So when you create a game in VS mode u get to choose from 1 VS 1 or 2 VS 2 or 3 vs 3 or even 4 vs 4. So that you have a few allies and you work as a team to get all the countries over the map. To make the exp work fairly depending on what type of match you are playing you get different exp.An example would be in 4 vs 4 you get 10000exp whereas in a 3 vs 3 you get 15000 exp and so on.
A classic mode would be the normal mode.

Moving troops needs to have a range penalty, similar to Empire Juice. Or just make moves draw from Empire Juice (maybe at 25% rate or something... just some kind of move penalty). Or maybe no discount at all - sometimes it seems like for the first 2-3 hours of a game, you should have time to set up more.

Satellite 3 should give you an estimated number of troops required for a 90% success rate or something - IF you want to do a satellite 3. Of course, it should cost out the nose to have that kind of info. Or perhaps it just gives global strengths of your enemies armies, inc number of nukes/napalms, shielded territories... etc.

The map feels a little small in places, I wonder if some countries could be combined? I dunno, maybe that's not worth it. It also detracts from realism so maybe no.

More bonus territories. I've only played a few games but so far I've never seen anywhere other than my capital give a discount or bonus of any kind.

More standardization in starting territories. When I start with Latvia and the other guys start with Brazil and India... you know it's going to be a short game.

Alliances that cannot be broken (once formed, you're allied, until it's down to just you and the other guy). Or they can be broken, but you get a 30 min cool down warning that it's about to be broken.

Radiation makes a country impossible to capture for 1 hour? 2 hours? If you attack, you will have a 0% success rate until a cool down expires. Or make it a step down... 25% success multiplier for the first hour, 50% multiplier for the second hour... and so on.

Just some ideas from a terrible player.

Yes, your objective is to dominate the world. Anyone can join in at any time and take countries away from you, so that game isn't yet over.

@dicker: You have some really good suggestions. One thing about the starting territories though: if you're given a wealthy starting country, your starting cash will be considerably lowered as a handicap.

Just some ideas from a terrible player.
You're better than me lol

Just FYI, I check this thread frequently and I normally do changes/additions on the weekends.

I know some people who consider the game boring, but actually it's because they just play on their own in their own locked world, to take over the world on their own, that no one else are allowed to play. For them it will be boring because there is no one else to play against, or maybe the XP given at the end is too low.

I think you should increase start-up money for people who get poor country for example:

My friend got Guinea only makes $355 per hour and around Africa you can only get $1,500 from invading other countries, where as I got New Zealand $11,000 per hour then Australia gets around $80,000

It's structured so the weaker countries will give you much more starting cash. For example, if you start off with an African country, you'll get near $7m, but if you start with USA, you'll get around $700,000.

Right, which is why you start out with 10x more money with an African country. Your starting country will affect you how you initially play. It's fair, but you still need to adapt :)

Is that a bit like an alliance? And also you need more XP as well: classic mode gives out 25,000 XP, while VS Mode will be as low as 15,000 XP.

How about a win condition so you don't have to hit each and every last country? I've gotten to the point where i own 3/4 of the world, and i still need to take probably half an hour to click country by country. (In part from the slow refresh time).

On thoughts of the refresh time, are you db query'ing on every page load? Or do you have a page changed variable that you set and just check on?

How big is your coding team?
Just me. I designed, coded and run the site.

How about a win condition so you don't have to hit each and every last country?
I get this question a lot. The game ends when every country is taken, because anyone can join at any time, so you haven't really 'won' yet.

On thoughts of the refresh time, are you db query'ing on every page load? Or do you have a page changed variable that you set and just check on?
Are you a programmer? There's really no way to cache a game, because everything is constantly updating. If you have specific suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I know this has probably been suggested a few times but a server upgrade would be nice. It's not a massive issue I've just noticed at times it's quite slow to respond.

Have you considered different game types?
There is the normal one of owning the whole world country by country, but have you thought about something like the capture the flag? Where you have to hold a country for as long as you can which gains you points?

Just a small suggestion, when in game and you go to attack another country, the country list to attack from is set up to show the country with the most troops first. would it be possible to have an option for organizing them by the nearest country instead? I just think it would simplify things when attacking.

Planes and Ships which would = to Dogfights and Sea fights but onto that You should have for at least 8 major countries a special branch of units and you can only recruit per say 10k of each per day! These units are stronger then basic soldiers and the special units could give of some bonuses such as

Russia - Spetsnaz 2% Damage to all Infantry
USA - Navy 2% to all Ships (if you include a navy)
Britain - UKSF Airplanes 2% (if you include an Airforce)
North Korea - SOF Nuke costs 1 mill less
Poland - GROM Tanks become 2% Stronger
France - GIGN Soldier Recruitment time shortens .2 secs
German - KSK Army can move to per say 2 nations where they couldnt, idk the exact Kilometers but yea
Australia - SOCOM Technology Research costs drop 200k Napalm costs drop 25k, Defense drop costs 100k so to buy def it would be (900k)

Some Estimates per say ill definatly Revise them the more i play but yea some suggestions! The Troops can have their own pics to differentiate them with any other special forces they also could have their Nations colors as backgrounds! yea hefty cost for these troops but only a possibility of Recruiting 10k-20k Once the first troops are recruited the bonuses activate and stay as is until that person looses the country! The troops will still be stronger and active just the bonus will be lost! So yea tell me what you thinK:)

I like your specific country perks. That was something I was working on adding a while back, but it turned into capital perks. I also like your idea of having a limit on the amount of these special units you can recruit. Very interesting.

OK new idea:) Continent Bonuses! First of lets say all the continents shall we:
North America
South America
Central America
Europe
Asia
Africa
Middle East
Oceanic

Now here's how this will play out! If a player gains the whole continent he gets a perk, some perks larger then others because of all the countries! Also when a person gains a continent the continent will be highlighted or of the person's color so people see who took it all! Also a flag will appear in the center of the continent so far im only thinking of the European Union flag but yea! Also Russia is part of both EU and Asia so players will have to fight for it ;)!

North America - Reduction of Tank Recruitment time by .3-.4 secs unlocks US.Rangers special unit for the continent only 10k of them stronger then Experienced soldiers 3.88 to all stats

South America - Faster money grow, instead of an hour money regenerates in 45 min, Expeditionary Force 20k of the unit 2.44 of all attributes

European Union - Reduction of Soldier Recruitment Time .3-.4 unlocks Eurocorps 6k Soldiers 5.00 all stats

M.E - Is allowed to build Nukes, unlocks Taliban 25k Infantry 2.22 all attributes

Oceanic - 10 Free Napalms, OCR Oceanic Commando Regiments 2k Troops 800 Tanks 3.66 Troops Tanks are Regular

Asia - Flight that costs 6 mill is Reduced to 3 mill PLASOF (Peoples Liberation Army Special Operations Forces) 2k Tanks 4.00

Also EMP my new idea costing 1 mill$ Like the napalm but it shuts down tanks! So yea those are my ideas on how continent Bonuses could play a part in this game! With their specific special units included, with them we could post a pic and the countries background when you see them in the troops selection! Tell me what you guys think:)

Idea: host the game in more locations.

I'm playing from Germany and it's constantly 10-15sec delay on any action "in-game", which makes it VERY annoying to play and hard to stay competitive i guess. (dunno where your server is located, maybe it's just the game being slow?)

And also military expenditures are WAY more smaller than they would be in real life. For example the US, which gets 700,000 dollars per hour here but in real life the us gets 687,105,000,000 dollars per year, and if you do the maths its about 78,000,000 dollars per hour!

Also Ive been noticing people getting bored of games and leaving them, we should do something in this game to spice it up or at least game wise, it feals like your not in a real competition more like just a casual game! For tournaments wise i had half of the world i go to sleep and i loose everything and die wtf ? Tournament wise we need to schedule it way better so that doesn't happen, have 4 players online and when all 4 go offline they cant start attacking untill the next day at a certain time! Ehhh we need the visual appeal so more people will play, and stay in this game!

Well Frankly set a time cap for these things or work around people with scheduels like this! Set a time say 9:30 Eastern Pacific done every knows its then and it ends per say 2:00 am then it picks up at 12:00 pm *following pacific standard times* but yea!

Ok, first off, the game is great. I hope you keep working on it.

Here are some suggestions:

- Ability to select the country to attack AND the country to attack from on the world map (instead of selecting only the country to attack, and then having to pick the attacking country from a drop down list), This would save time.

- Selecting countries to move troops could also be done this way (two clicks on the world map).

- Currently, if you are attacking from a country with tanks, then the interface is set so that at least one tank must invade. If at least one infantry is invading, then it should be possible to set zero tanks.

- I'm not sure about this, but I believe it to be true based on my observations: When invading a country with zero defenders, the attacker still seems to lose troops... and the amount of troops lost appears to be a percentage of the total attacking force. So if 100,000 infantry attacks a country with zero defenders, you can lose thousands of troops! This doesn't make sense to me.

- As the game is setup currently it seems to make more sense to invade a country with just slightly more than necessary to conquer it, as the loss of troops always appears to be a percentage of the total attack force. I think it would better if the number of troops lost was a factor of the number of defenders. So, for example, each defender can eliminate between 0.5 and 2.0 attackers, with the most likely result being 1 to 1 (e.g. a defending territory with 1000 troops should be able to fend off an invasion of 1000 troops). Or you could tweak it a bit to make it more in favor of the defenders. But right now, it seems like the game determines the likelihood of the attacker's invasion being a success and then randomly determines a percentage of the attack force to be lost in the attempt.

- If a player has no countries left, they should be eliminated from the game, allowing new players to join.

- Users who have quit a game, should not be allowed to rejoin the same game as a new player.

- It's already been mentioned, but I think that you should group the small, low-income countries. It's great to see all the countries and their flags, etc., but I think grouping some countries together would make the game more streamlined. For example, a number of the eastern European countries could be grouped, as could some of the African nations, Central America, etc. The Flag for the group of nations could be a mosaic of the nations in the group, to keep the flavor.

Great suggestions, PlasticSpoon. I absolutely am going to be continuing development. Although, I've slowed down right now, because the game is pretty solid and many of the changes/features need to be baked in, instead of added on. Which is why you'll see many things in v2. Also, I'm dividing my time with other projects and work.

I'm going to respond to them as if they're numbered.

1: A better select/action system will be in v2.
2: It's a jquery issue that'll be fixed in v2.
3: Yes, that's true. It's sort of a penalty so you can't steamroll empty countries with no cost. This will not be changed.
4: It's much much more complicated and more balanced than that :)
5: I don't want to immediately boot them out, in case they wanted to chat or whatever. Although, a better system for this will be in v2.
6: You can rejoin a game only once. It's needed in case you get a bad start or get unlucky.
7: I agree and disagree with this. I'm not sure yet what my decision will be.

i just found this game and i like it. on grouping countries, venezuela, colombia ecuador and panama was one country Grand colombia they call it now to distinguish from colombia. also Republic of central america included guatemala, honduras, el salvador nicaragua and costa rica. The mexican empire included texas california new mexico and arizona and went all the way down to the border with panama those are historically acurate groupings with historically acurate single flag. Also the peru-bolivia federation

not sure if this has been said or not, but if by the time you finish the V2 project maybe you should start looking into dedicated servers, that way host servers don't get clogged from hosting 8 players from one system, you know what i mean? If you do host dedicated servers this would also be an acceptable place (in my eyes) to use ads, that way you don't have to worry about lagging or loading problems for the price of looking at ads!

Hello! Just had a look at the V2 list and wanted to ask a question. I know from RideTheLightning that the "better unit moving" section means moving for multiple countries into one, but will there be an option to equally divide all your troops into all your countries? Just wanted to ask, because I think that would be a great feature. Also, (and I know this might be difficult to implement) a feature which divides your troops fairly between your countries (e.g you have USA, Canada and Greenland. USA gets more than Canada, which gets way more than Greenland), so you can protect your more valued countries. Just some thoughts and questions.

For the New game about cards, i have great ideas in which we can spread out the card types into either

Tribes
Mythologies
Darkness/Light/Water/Fire/Alchemy and Machines

So yea Tribes wise we come up with something that does with
Darkness Skeletons, Vampires, Ghouls etc
Light, Warriors, Knights, Angels, Pegasus
Water, Sea Creatures, Leviathen Kraken also Merman and aquatic evils this card game could also include spell cards such as Rip Tide, lowers a certain Monsters health
Fire ~ Orcs, Imps, Demons, Succubes, Astaroth, Cerberus, Lucifer, lots of demons
Machines/Alchemy ~ Golems, Titans, Immortals, forbidden cards basically and such! These cards can have regular common types but most are rare so that you can power up your main deck!

The Mythology could play into Hero cards you can see the rarity of the card by the color sooo black is commen white is uncommen yellow is rare and dark green or purple could be Very Rare, You also could have Hero cards that are very Rare and either could be your deck commander or just a very rare card u play!
Deck Commanders wise have special abbilities like Strengthen a certain type of unit or damage others!

~ Types of Heroes can be Perseus, Theseus, Odysseus, Paris, Raphael, Two headed Megaladon, Chareon, etc and etc!

I know that this is completely off tangent, but have you heard of eRebulik? This could be a direct competitor. If you're a one man programmer then billions of props to you! eReublik is not a one man gig. I enjoy your UI a lot. I know that this is "individual game room" based per say, while eRepublik is a single world mmo. However, a lot of games have the options of Arcade Mode or Online Mode. It would be cool to see Arcade Mode, and World Mode for this game.

If you're still taking suggestions for v2 of this game then may I suggest a second level of shields / fortifications. The upgrade ceases to be useful once opponents research the second satellite upgrade.

Also, in password protected games where people can't just jump in randomly, perhaps there could be an option to pause the game entirely (including money accrual), such that it could be left for a day or two without the money spiralling out of control.

Shields are still useful against the satellite upgrades, because they provide an added defense against attacks. A second level still sounds interesting though. Any ideas where to take it?

Yes, I should have said that they cease to be useful for concealing forces. Maybe a second level of shields could counterpose the second satellite upgrade (which incidentally, I think is far too cheap) as well as nullifying power napalm and providing a greater advantage to the defenders when attacked. A third satellite upgrade (as per the start of the thread) could then outdo the second shield upgrade.

For what it's worth, I don't think you should group smaller countries in the new version, especially if the victory conditions are changed, because then the task of mopping up every single country would be eliminated anyway.

Also, I might be wrong, but I often can't account for some of the troops I had in a country after I lose it. If I have, say, 5,000 troops in a country and it is invaded and captured, the post-invasion screen often says that not all 5000 were killed. Perhaps another addition could be that the surviving troops could retreat to a neighbouring country, if there is one(apologies if this already happens).

Navy could be like another set of units that can fight say only tanks or can act like a shield against nukes. That'd be cool.

v2 is probably 30% done right now. I leave for vacation mid September and hope to have an open beta before or immediately after.

I noticed that when I want to conquer and enemy, I napalm their infantry to smithereens, then sweep up the tanks with a back-up army. 2000inf+500tanks --> 50inf(basically 0)+500 tanks, but when I invade it says 50 enemy inf killed, 0 enemy tanks killed but the tanks have been killed as they are nowhere else on the entire map... it could a small bug, worth fixing though.

P.S. I enjoy the game very much, and am very grateful of your effort! keep up the good work :D

Sounds like a bug with the number that's outputted to you. The actual counts and calculations are correct. If it's a quick fix, I'll do it, otherwise, v2 is due out in a few weeks anyway and this part will be redone.

the last point coud be a problem cause people who are playing the game and it get deleted just cause the owner wasn't good enough and a another guy that joined conquored everything before the owner could do anything

I would like to know if there is some more of the countries, i noticed that brunei is not on the current map and was wondering if it would be on this one

Probably not. I did remove quite a few countries from the map in v1, like really tiny countries and islands. Makes it less cumbersome.

Please consider this:

Certain countries have certain perks when you successfully invade them; e.g. China adds +20% to your income rate, or owning the USA letting you get troops 25% faster, or the first empire who invades Russia gets 3 free nukes.

If alliances are added, I'd suggest this format:
Peace Treaty - Friendly countries cannot be invaded
Military Alliance - Sharing of troops w/ Peace Treaty effect

Naval battles sound cool, but logistically, I don't think it fits in the game. Airforce, however, does. I'm going on vacation in two weeks, so my plan is to have the beta completely done before then.

How will the taking of percentages of countries work?

Basically, you'll need to take 80% (by default) of all countries to win a game, instead of the current 100%. I'm going to add options in the game creation to allow other ways of winning, such as capturing all the super powers, etc.

Dude, can you add a time restriction feature?
ex: You can pick a timezone (GMT +8:00 or something) then you can choose a 'sleep' period (like 9:00 PM - 10:00 AM) where the game would not allow invasions on P or NP countries, but you can still earn money and build troops during that period.
